Whatever Happened to the Church of Scientology Over on Buckner Road?

I love how one home sale opens up Pandora’s boxes to other sales and real estate tales!

The Church of Scientology bought this property at the corner of Buckner Boulevard and Dixie Lane in 2000 and made the neighbors mighty nervous. In 2008, it was on the market for $725,000, listed with Perry Jones. According to a 2005 article in the Dallas Morning News, the home was originally built in the 1940′s, enjoyed a stint as a bed and breakfast as well as a wedding chapel. Imagine, if you can, a ballroom with a large jacuzzi and mirror-covered poles. (!!) The Church of Scientology, needing more space, moved on to a 42,000 square foot office building in Las Colinas and may even be out of there by now.

Well, I always wondered who the heck bought it and for how much. Now we find out that it was Dave Anderson, who last week closed on Belle Nora. Anderson bought the former church May 1, 2009 (from the Church of Scientology, but is not a Scientologist — he just liked the house) and named it or re-christened it Grandwick. He paid about $387,000. Sources tell me Anderson, who owns scads of East Dallas properties, never lived in the place and may want to convert it to a bed and breakfast or re-vive the wedding chapel. It’s zoned commercial.

That property is in my neighborhood and I jog by it every week. There's always a Cadillac and a white van there, but they never move and it never looks like anyone is there. I hope Anderson does something with it soon … it could be a beautiful place but right now, it's just kind of creepy.

I thought the Church of Scientology is a small group. Do they have that many members to move into a 42,000 sq. ft place in Las Colinas?

Strangely enough, this home was purchased around 1985 by Al Morgan (of Al Morgan autos), who at the time, had just lived at Bella Nora for many years and sold it to move into this house on Dixie.
