Examples: one of my favorite Classic Urban Home memories is a home with an insulated crawl space that had a carpeted floor – for extra storage space! (The home sold so fast I couldn’t even write about it!) You won’t find old-fashioned 50 gallon tank water heaters in Michael’s homes — every home utilizes energy-efficient hybrid water heaters that save homeowners hundreds in energy costs. Love smooth, easy to clean concrete floors? How about a kitchen with recycled countertops and sunny backsplash transom windows for natural light. A dual-sided fireplace between the fireplace and outdoor patio? A master shower with multiple body wash sprays and a laundry room near the dirty clothes – upstairs, next to the bedrooms.
Each Classic Urban Home is designed with thoughtful care, great planning, ease of maintenance and to simply last forever. Which is a good thing: studies show Americans are moving less, not more, and staying in their homes for longer stretches. Every Classic Urban home has standard low water usage fixtures, extra insulation, at least 16 SEER A/C units, radiant barrier decking, low E windows. And every home is Energy Star rated as well as registered with Green Built Texas.
Sometimes the most dedicated careers begin right in high school. Michael Turner was 17 years old when he first began working as a craftsman. Not only did he have a natural talent for building, he loved working with his hands and creating structure out of dreams. He worked for Tom Greico of Timbergreen Custom Homes straight out of high school, which turned into a full-time job after graduation. He was quite simply the perfect building superintendent because of his diligence and perfectionism. Soon, other builders wanted him on their team. Michael worked for Tim Garvey of Garvey Homes, and Steve Box of B&B Custom Homes, amassing more than 20 years of experience before he started his own company with an investor in 2005. Since then, Classic Urban Homes has built more than 21 homes in the greater Dallas area, from 2005 to 2011.
Today Turner, principle and managing partner of Urban Classic Homes, is still making structure out of dreams for hundreds of extremely happy, satisfied home owners. Classic Urban Homes is a D Magazine Best Builder and has won multiple awards for its homes including Best New Home for 2010 by the Dallas Homebuilders Association. A member of both the United States Green Building Council and Green Built Texas, Classic Urban Homes is led by Michael Turner. Turner, who is a board member at the Dallas Homebuilders Association, is a 25-year veteran in the business and holds multiple professional industry designations including Certified Graduate Builder and Certified Green Professional. And frankly, I have never met happier homeowners than those who live in a Classic Urban home.
“Throughout the process, we found Mike to be not only extremely cost sensitive and efficient, but responsive to our ideas, creative in identifying options and solutions, and very positive in his communications and sharing with us,” says Debbi and David Berins.” He delighted in finding ways to create the unique features we wanted in our home for much less cost than we feared. What many people expect to be a negative experience turned out to be a delightful, fun process for us. Far from having the horror stories that many people garner from building a custom home, we have nothing but happy tales about how we worked in tandem with our builder to create our dream house, ahead of schedule, and under budget. You couldn’t possibly have a better experience than we did.”
