Do QR Codes Really Make a Difference When Marketing a Property?

Share News:

Blah, blah, blah — insert something snarky about the CueCat — blah, blah.

When it comes to QR (quick response) codes, I have to agree with this Phoenix Realtor: QR codes are not going to drastically change how Realtors market properties. The Internet already did that, so I can’t imagine a little pixelated box is going to help agents move listings any better than having a well-written MLS post with top-notch photos.

However, back in 2010, Coldwell Banker DFW wrote this bit of advertorial saying QR codes were the next great thing:

“This technology has great potential in the real estate industry as a way to give homebuyers the information they need the instant they want it, no matter where they are,” says Jan Loomis, vice president of marketing for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage – Dallas/Fort Worth. “With so many of us relying on our smart phones these days, we fully expect that QR codes will quickly become an indispensable tool for home shoppers here in the Dallas-Fort Worth markets.”

So, two years later, are QR codes really helping connect buyers and sellers, or are they another novelty, not unlike a certain barcode scanner?

While I agree that QR codes are not going to change the real estate game, this picture of QR sign draws my attention and I think that in itself is worth it from the marketing standpoint. I wonder how much it is to create one of those QR code signs..

I downloaded the app that lets you read these codes…I guess its a good idea, just seems there are better, more efficient ways to get the info when you need it.

I dont see the ease of using them…yet. They have been around for sometime in Europe but never seem to catch on here in the US.

I feel that QR codes are a fad past there time. Many agents don't know how to use them properly, and are placing them on their blog/website. QR codes may have their place, but I have yet to use one.

I have been a Dallas area Realtor for 30 years, love technology, and have been using QR codes on a few of my listings for the past month. These codes are used by agents for lead generation by capturing cell phone numbers, names of callers etc. The information provided on my listings when the code is scanned is minimal at best and I would rather buyers see all the pics and full property information on websites like realtor.com, Zillow,or Trulia for instance. Consumers deserve more so I'm taking them down. Karen Anderson, The Michael Group

It all comes down to what that QR code takes them to after a scan. If it takes them to some generic Realtor page that's not optimized for a mobile phone, then it's just a cheap gimmick that does nothing for the consumer.

Take them to a relevant page, optimized for the web, with an actual *purpose* for going there (like "Scan this for an inside tour"), then you're starting to actually make sure of an incredible technology. It's the same idea as when Realtors used to put the info sheets in little boxes in the yard. Now, you can do the same thing, but directing them to a page.

This is coming from a consumer though, so maybe there's a reason why Realtors don't do this now?

Tried the QR code thing. Not my cup of tea. Had no direct or indirect sales off of using QR codes. Having an awesome SEO program had better results.
